QUESTION
What is the Adam God Theory?
ANSWER
This is the idea that God started the human race by procreation after
creating the heavens and the earth. It says that every person on this
earth was sired and begotten of a woman. It says that women are as
much a part of the origin of man as God. The first human beings of this
earth were born here. It says that Adam and Eve were brought here from
another earth like planet along with seeds. It says that Cain and Abel
are types or figures of the battle between truth and falsehoods or Jesus
and Satan. It says that all earths in all the universe were started by an
Adam and an Eve and the book of Genesis' account of creation is the
typical example of populating an earth like planet such as ours.
QUESTION
What is the difference between this thesis on The Adam God Theory and the other explanations of Brigham's Teachings?
There are six general approaches to explain ADAMS role in creation of man itemized as follows:
First Theory Version
Adam was created from this earth's dust and after having been formed was given the breath of life. He then fell and became the father of this worlds mortality. Eve was created from "Adam's rib" in a literal sense as if she were a female clone of Adam.
Second Theory Version
Adam was the third member of a Presidency of Heaven and was given life after a long sleep. His origin varies according to the belief in the role that His Father had in his coming to life and receiving the breath of life. He fell through a divine plan for the salvation of mankind in this earth trial. (Essentially this is a magic view as Adam appears as if by magic as if it is just "accepted" God placed Adam in his position with no importanance assign to the knowledge of his origin. 2003 addition)
Third Theory Version
Adam is a Son of God in a literal sense. His Father is conceived as a Senior Adam and He is a Junior Adam. This makes the introduction of mankind after the fall a two phase event. It was Adam Junior who fell and died.
Fourth Theory Version
Adam is and was the God who was the Savior from a previous earth and received life in Himself such that He could die and live at will. This version put Adam as a Son of an Adam who is a Son of an Adam ad infinitum. The fall was merely a process of creation and was not a transgression of law but a kind of miracle we only could understand if we were likewise to be given life in oneself.
Fifth Theory Version
Adam was Michael who was chosen in the pre-existent counsels and was a spirit personage. A person with a body was needed to do the work for Michael to start the Human Race. This substitution is refered to as "Eternal Proxy Subrogation." This vicarious work is the basis of the thesis in The Adam God Theory by the author james n. hall (c) 1986 STP.
Six Theory Version
This theory is a result of rejecting the original views and propositions of Brigham Young and the effort to replace it with an 'idea' that builds a 'Cosmic' Christ. In this view the premortal Christ is the creator of man's body. The Father is somewhat eclipsed such as the moon eclipses the sun. Since the Atonement of Christ is infinite in its defined effect; it is to save people of the other earths in the cosmos. In this version the reason Christ chose this Earth to come to do His atonement is that it is the wickedest of all creations. By overcoming this Earth the atonement will be more effective to the Universe of Earths less wicked. This 'idea' uses the principle that Christ descended below all things to be above all things. (added 2003)
Trying to find what Brigham actually taught is a task that seems to be avoided by most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. There is a fear that he actually taught from the position of the First Presidency a doctrine that is not sustainable in todays views. Or there is a denial that persist to maintain a doctrinal simplicity that is easier to teach on a global scale. However this may be, there is great profundity in the advanced teachings of Brigham Young as during the time he was introducing this view (1852 April Adam God Theory existed before Joseph Smiths death 1844) of creation, the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin was being promoted and generated acceptance in the academic circles (1844 to 1859 November the date of publication of "Origin of Species"). Perhaps the Adam God Theory is the best answer yet to the secular humanist view of man as a product of evolutional soup of the primal beginnings of earth as seen by todays Godless social movements that will promote a moral degradation.
COMMENT FROM A READER FOLLOWS:
Dear Mr. Hall,
Thank you for correcting the link. I will look over it when I have time. I might point out a couple of items, though, which will prevent me from responding to it once I finish.
First was your comment that you would not enter into debate over the subject. That being the case, why even bother me with the link? I do not send you unsolicited materials and ask you to consider them, but then state up front that I will not engage in any debate over them. That is very arrogant.
Second, you limited your consideration of the subject to one sermon only - the first one on the subject. That is a very narrow view, since many other sermons and writings show us in greater detail just exactly what Mr. Young meant when he taught that doctrine. To leave them aside is to ignore his own clarifications on the subject. That is not a very scholarly approach to study or research, and it leads only to erroneous conclusions.
Finally, you refuse to accept his teachings as "scripture", since it was not put to a public vote. I would remind you of Brigham Young's own comments on this matter. From the Deseret Weekly News (June 6, 1877) page 274, "When I have spoken by the power of God and the Holy Ghost, it is the truth, it is scripture, and I have no fears but that it will agree with all that has been revealed in every particular." In case you wonder whether the sermon Brigham Young preached that you refer to falls into this category, I also offer the following from Journal of Discourses 13:95, again quoting Brigham Young, "I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call scripture." It seems Brigham Young did not feel he needed the vote of the people to call his remarks scripture. He considered them to be anyway, so we can consider them so as well.
Thank you for your e-mail. May God bless you with a true understanding rather than blind excuses about the errors of Mormonism, I pray in His name.
ANSWER:
May I place your response in my web page of FAQ if you give permission. I will not edit it except to remove your name and email address if you so choose. Also I do not debate as this technique chooses a side to an issue and explores by logical dichotomy. I will discuss this topic so as to gain a level of mutual discovery. Debate wins an argument. I want to win in truth. At any rate the points you make will be considered and answered in the FAQ anonymously if you do not reply. I also said "Any who attempt to damn me to old ideas that prove to be birthing pangs to new ideas, I now question their motives. As I delight in the ever newing truth."
The Christian concept of cannonization is the same as standard works of the church for the LDS membership. Therefore Brigham Young never entered his sermon concept into the Standard Works or in general the body of the sustained scriptures of the Church. Any inspired statement by an authority of the Church is in some respects "scripture" but is not in the same level as say the Book of Mormon.
This thesis stays within the confines of theory. But theory in the Doctrine and Covenants has a surprising meaning; to some, which is -- theory is perfecting to the believer. See for reference D&C 88:78 "... that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel ...." Notice the order of instruction is first theory, then principle, and third doctrine.
Truth and light do not require a sustaining vote in the Church. Therefore the real question remains whether Brigham presented the truth in "His Theory" and whether it contains the principles of light to the mind.
Thank you for your communication. james
QUESTION:
What is this futurlogics? How does is help crack the code to the ADAM GOD thing?
ANSWER:
A thinking system helps the study of the scriptures or any question concerning it. Futurlogics is a way of studying it out in your mind. This has been suggested in the Doctrine and Covenants. I have taken this advice so seriously. This passage is quoted below:
D&C 9:7 7 Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. D&C 9:8 8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. D&C 9:9 9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me. D&C 9:10 10 Now, if you had known this you could have translated; nevertheless, it is not expedient that you should translate now.Note the burning vs the stupor both come from deity. There appears to be a possibility that the better the study method the better the communication to be received.
QUESTION:
In the Adam God Theory there are reference to the 'calculus of the gospel', how did this idea come about?
ANSWER:
Actually the 'reasoning of Abraham' was mentioned by Joseph Smith and this gave me the idea that infinite subjects could be delt with in this way in much the same manner as mathematic does with limits. When the worlds without numbers are considered as creations multiply and replenish some higher order of thought is needed to capacitate the mind to think in such terms. Perhaps my interest in math gave me this metaphor to discuss the principles found in the Adam God Theory. Obviously the concept of the origin of God or even the origin of man require this assistance. To understand the commandments of God require us to understand where we came from and where we are going according to the things we do here and now.
QUESTION:
What is the thirteen month war in the book of Revelations?
ANSWER:
The hebrew calendar was lunar. Because of this a Thirteen month year was used to correct the lunar months with the solar year. Perhaps the 13 months refers to a year to begin new again so seasons are in the right place. What I am saying is that this war could be a correcting war for the purposes of sychronizing events in the last days in preparation of the coming of the Lord. It may be any duration of time. Those who attempt to interpret the scriptures should beware of being bit by their own dog. I am not against interpreting the scriptures as a personal endeavor. I once read and believed that Heb 11:1 was to be interpreted as "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for" to mean "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for" I believed this for 20 years until it was discovered that the "substance" referred to the sap layer in bark where the living part of the tree is found. It is the storage area of the tree to enable the tree to live the winter months. Isaiah 6:13 says " . . . as a teil tree and as an oak whose substance is in them . . ." Also one need only look at Heb 10:34 where it mentions ". . . better and an enduring substance." Of course it means the "food storage that gives us assurance" Like our two years supply is a substance like the "cambium layer of bark" to us during hard times. Joseph Smith translated this as assurance. But deeper investigation shows that assurance is the extract of bark that was used for medicine in those days so the interpretation goes full circle. Faith is everywhere compared to plant growth and a seeding. So why would it surprise us that Paul did the same here. Oh the word evidence in the remaining part of Heb 11:1 "the evidence of things not seen." Also to translate the Heb 11:1 correctly it would read as thus. "Now faith is the "living bark" of things hoped for , the sprout of things not seen." I am only saying that the thirteen month war may mean more than the literal thirteen months. Lunar months that is-- because the Jew did not have thirty day months.
QUESTION: What is meant by the phrase "calculus of the gospel?"
ANSWER: The "Adam God Theory" is base upon mathematical principles that are found in the higher math where infinite series and digression's limits are determined or integrated. Those who study the calculus should find a familiar tone and tenor to the Adam God Theory propositions. If those who live on other planets were to visit the universal language of the universe would be numbers and mathematical principles. Like the elements that make up the constituents of all things they are eternal and consistent from all levels of existence. All truth is independent in the sphere in which it is created math is the sphere of the Adam God Theory and there is the principle of the demorgan theorem, theory of limits, differentiation, integration, series, logic. A math major in not necessary to understand the "Green Book" but it helps. There is a leap of logic that takes place when one advances from the arithmetic to the algebra and from the algebra to the calculus. Likewise there is the leap of faith and logic going from allegory of creation to the Adam God Theory.
QUESTION: Are Mormons Christians?
ANSWER: This question is like asking if women are men. Women and Men are both of the same species of mankind. Mormons have a faith in Christ and believe in God the Father. Mormons accept Joshua bar Joseph the son of Mary the Messiah or in Greek Jesus Christ as the Son of God and as a literal descendant of God. The Nicene Christian take Jesus Christ as God in the Flesh or a manifestation of God to man, as God is a Mystery unless revealed to man in a form man can understand which is a Man in Perfection. Mormons or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are definitely not Nicene Christians. Nor do they subscribe to any of the Nicene Creed of A. D. 325 that is not true. If a mormon uses the word 'trinity', it is a sign that he is either using the word loosely or is ignorant of his own doctrine. European Christianity can be traced to the city of Nicaea or Nice in Asia Minor. Mormons accept that they too are a child of God and a brother of Jesus their Savior. This is a family relationship where the Patriarch is God the Father in the most profound sense of meaning. Mormon Christianity can be traced to Joseph Smith who has testified that he saw two separated and distinct personages who are God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son. God introduced His Son to Joseph and was instructed to take instruction from His Son. This means that Jesus has full commission to represent the Father in all things. Mormons believe in Jesus as the Word or Messenger of God in all respects but know that the Father has delegated all Power and Priesthood to His Son to finish the work of bringing to pass the resurrection and perfection of man for the Glory of the Father. Eventually with the progress of mankind to fulfill the purposes of God, Man himself will be endowed with this same Power and Priesthood to continue this Eternal Work. Mormons believe that God the Father has a body of flesh and bones and is spiritually sustained to live forever where mans body has a time and is sustained by chemistry of blood. Man dies where God lives on. Mormons Christians are part of a family of heaven and come here to earth by means of procreation. Nicene Christians are creatures of God the Creator and are made here on earth by creation. Since man comes from a family and family values are sustained by its doctrine they will see family relations in their deity. Likewise the Nicene Christian will see man as a product of God and will see the created relations in their deity.
QUESTION: How do you account for the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden in view of the Adam God Theory?
ANSWER: The Adam and Eve Story is a metaphor or a similitude of the pre-existent state of man. Adam and Eve represent the Creative Origin of man. Cain represents Lucifer and later becomes Satan as a vagabond and fugitive on the run on earth. Abel represents the mortal Messiah and the atonement. Seth the replacement of Abel represents the resurrection of Jesus. The battle over the offerings to be accepted by Cain and Abel is a type of the War in Heaven over the Plan of Salvation. Since Abel a keeper of flocks was accepted by faith in the Messiah. Where Cain is the offering the products of the earth or vegetables we see the two plans that were given to the Father in the pre-existence. Lucifers being cast out and becoming Satan is the type of Cain being cursed. This type is through out the book of Genesis. But as with all the types and parables of the scriptures there is parallel meanings in these teachings and even multi- layered meanings. The Adam God Theory only highlights one of these layers of meaning in a metaphoric way. Adam is God is a Metaphor to help us understand where we came from!
QUESTION: Does the Adam God Theory limit God making God just a man?
ANSWER: The constitution of the United States of America is a limiting document design to prevent a totalitarian government. God is All Powerful therefore we must not be free. But God limits Himself that we may be both tested and free. Some say why does God let all these things happen? He is letting us solve our own problems for a test and for our free agency. Perhaps the greatest miracle of all is that God can limit what influence He has over all things. The Adam God Theory will engender in man a greater sense of these freedoms that God has extended for our own developments. The war in heaven was over the eternal battle of 'security vs freedom' Lucifer offered assured salvation where Jesus provided a continuation of the Fathers limited government and self development and the opportunity to overcome the risks of life by taking upon us his name. The God who is Always all powerful is responsible for complete destiny and choices of man. The Adam God Theory is like the constitution of the United States we must defend ourself by keeping the commandments of God. This is the Salvation that requires our own initiative. Satan in the last days will offer security if we surrender our salvation. This is the chains of Hell. Jesus will return again when man has gone as he can go on his own. Then He will assist us to the next level to prepare the earth for the return of the FATHER.
QUESTION: Does the mormon concept that 'God was once a man' make God too feeble to save mankind or have any sway in the universe?
ANSWER: All who think that the mormon God is lessened because of His origin does not understand the hope this knowledge gives the faithful. Many would build up God beyond His real station to assuage their own fears of living in this world. By exaggerating the nature and origin of God there is the bombastic display before the fearful that the All Powerful can take care of any fear even with no effort on their own part. Truly God is All Powerful in every respect even to the lessons that we must learn for having been sent to this earth to experience mortality. This hope is animated within each of us due to the great Model and Example of The Father and His Son. Simply if Our Father Who was once a man as we are now, succeeded to such great heights then we, if given the same light and knowledge, could achieve the same. Jesus is the Example of How this is done. Contrary to even some mormons of modern orientation Jesus is just like all of us and worked out his own mission on earth as we should. He started from humble beginnings and grew in grace and truth to inherit the mantle of the Great Jehovah. Truly angels helped him on the way to His final ascension with His God and Our God and His Father and Our Father. Why would angels be needed to help an one already God as some purports. Those who understand the Law of Eternal Progression see the place of Eternal Proxy Subrogration to provide Regents to act in our behalf until we can go on our own and do likewise. From whence then does these doctrines come. A God who was once a man and we are His progeny ennobles each man. A God who has always been a God put man in his place as a creature destined and predestined by His fashioner. This is a big government view where each is a subject to a species apart such as the Noble of Europe considered themselves to be above those who they ruled and taxed. If by being children of God we then are all noble by birthright. God as a man once does away with the so called divine right of kings. But then who should rule then that there may be order. Jesus of course is the only one who has this right by merit of His great work in Judea. One of the lowliest angels in heaven could with ease defeat the whole armies of the earth. God is so much more than all the angels put together and lacks nothing to save. As He has declared that He is mighty to save. The war for mens minds will polarize to two camps. One camp will have a Cosmic Savior that guarantees security at the expense of freedom. The other camp will have the meek and lowly Savior that entreats by restraint and governs teaching correct principles specifying that freedom means that risks follow as the price of freedom. Indeed the political arenas of the earth will also so polarize. God having been a man once in nowise means He can not save to the uttermost degree. Those who think so lack understanding of their own origin.
QUESTION: What is faith?
COMMENT: Knowledge is not only infinite but greatly infinite in scope! Some means and a way must be used to approach this grand sea of knowledge spoken of in Isaiah. Isaiah 11:9 "They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea". Knowledge of the universe is also a subset of this infinity. But to know of God is to know about the knower of all the knowledge of the universe. Metacognition is the ability to think about thinking. Metaknowledge is the knowledge of knowledge. This is an infinite recursion into knowing about knowing. God or the Perfect Man can know about all of the knowledge of the universe. God also knows all about the knowledge of His knowledge. How is this possible--but through faith. Where ever there is a frontier of knowledge there will be prayer and faith. Faith is the 'exploring mind set' to uncover mystery and the unknown. In the Futurlogics faith is defined as the 'ability to do the best with the least'. The 'least' is our own standing or starting point of knowledge, knowing what we do know now to use this to pioneer the frontiers of knowledge. A faithful person will have many metaphors, types, parables, examples, controversies, contradictions, paradoxes, detected counterfeits, etc. as a tool kit to face this 'great sea'. Faith enables the navigators of the sea to find his way and reach the islands of Enlightenment and Truth. These islands are there ready to receive these sailors of this great sea of knowledge with rest. They are the Faithful of the Lord.
ANSWER: The atheist claims to know there is no god. Has he been everywhere to check!? The Universe is infinite! An honest atheist can only be an agnostic when he is humble enough to admit his limitations. A faithful person always admits there is a God because faith goes beyond the observation limits of the atheist. The atheist says there is no god because I have not seen him. The faithful says I know there is a god because my faith is growing and my knowledge is increasing. There are atheist who will not admit there is a god even if god introduces himself--because of their mind set.
Alma 32:21
21 And now as I said concerning faith--faith is not to have a
perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope
for things which are not seen, which are true.
QUESTION: Was Eve a clone of Adam?
ANSWER: Since this web page is to answer questions concerning the Adam God Theory, the answer will be given from that perspective first. No. Eve was born on another planet and brought here. She is one of Michaels wives. Before Michael became Adam She was married and sealed to Michael in some pre-earth world. Therefore She is His eternal companion. The Brick Theory is that Adam was created from inanimate matter or dust. In this case God elected to make Eve Secondarily from flesh and bone or perhaps from Adams DNA. This suggest that at least one of our ancestors was a clone. Of course God has the knowledge and technology to clone humans. But the pattern was set for each of us to procreate. Without the Adam God Theory some persons are created, 'cloned', and the rest are procreated. In the Adam God Theory all persons are procreated even Adam and Eve. This difference between creation of people and procreation of people is the hinge between the Adam God Theory and all the rest of the rationalizations concerning the origin of Man.
QUESTION: Why is the Adam God Theory not taught openly?
ANSWER: Two reasons: One is that it is too advanced. Second is it is a thinking system and thinking can not be instructed as other principles of the gospel. 'As a man thinketh so is he' . 'For My thoughts are not your thoughts'. If children are brought up with the idea or theory they will see that it is exquisitely simple. This thinking system will be part of their mental tools for the rest of their lives. Self esteem is enhanced with the theory and this is a destroyer of social classes and differenciations. Thinking is seen to be restricted to those in power positions by the world where lordship is prevelent.
